We have installed BugNET on our Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit) server with SQL Server 2008 Express as a back-end. We are also using ScrewTurn wiki in a parallel setup on the same server. Our ScrewTurn wiki has been working very smoothly; quick responses and no hangs. The server in general is in good health and we utilize it every day so we would be aware if there were any significant environmental issue. Our BugNET installation however seems to be very very slow. Issue updates seem to never end taking a matter of minutes just to update the milestone on a handful of issues (from the issues tab, Edit Properties). I have looked through the server event viewer but cannot identify any significant logged errors; perhaps I am missing an IIS specific log. I have also experienced slow response times when saving a new issue.

I really like this project and am exited to see how it will help everyone in our organization.

Thanks,

Jonathan H.

It sounds like BugNET may be timing out sending email notifications after you update an issue. Verify that your email server settings are correct in the application configuration page.

Thanks for the quick reply.

A look at the System Log does confirm your diagnosis. I have been unable to get the e-mail notification to work correctly yet (I am trying to use gmail SMTP only from my Windows server without SMTP installed), but at least by disabling the notification my updates are not taking so long. I think the e-mail setup my be related to something environmental (like allowing the web page to have access to gmail SMTP server), but I am not sure. Has anyone addressed a similar issue? I am new to system administration so it may be something obvious I am just missing.

Thanks,

Jonathan H.

GMAIL has to be specifically configured to allow SMTP in. Also is uses Secure (SSL) SMTP. Which is a different port (GMAIL's ports are non standard).
Please refer to the GMAIL online help for more information in configuring SMTP access correctly.
