Hi

Will BugNet 0.8 Beta 1 due out this week upgrade from a existing 7.921 installation?

Also, will a new install of 0.8 Beta 1 be upgradeable to future Beta's and  RC's and finals ?

Thanks

Good question and I was going to write about this in the release notes.  I wish the answer was yes but there are a few reasons upgrades will not be available from 7.921 right now.

The biggest reason being I haven't created upgrade scripts yet

The next one is that the database is still in flux from new features and improvements. I would like to make sure its fairly stable before starting to support upgrades.

Also a big reason, the database is a complete rewrite and while most of the tables are similar some serious effort and thought will have to go into making an upgrade script right now( which i haven't had time to do)

There will be another release of 0.7 as well that has database changes.

I am hoping that people will download 0.8 Beta 1 , install it and try out the new features and provide feedback on issues or concerns.  I am quite excited  to start using myself it because it is miles ahead of 0.7 and has a lot of features I want to use.

I would like to use 0.8 in production too, so let's make some upgrade and usage assumptions.

I would propose:
1. v0.8 beta 2 (or RC) to be published  soon
2. v0.8 beta 2 to be included in upgrade scripts
3. v0.8 to be merged back to the trunk or swap with v0.7x. There are different approaches to this, but I prefer to have continous work in trunk, and keep all past releases in branches. It is easier to manage then.
3. to have roadmap with estimated dates of new releases

This will help users planning migration to newer releases more precisely and will allow to move outstanding tasks from 0.7x to newer releases which will reduce developer's efforts (add something to 0.7 then migrate to 0.8 - quite burdensome).

What do you think? As a community we are here for help and take over some work :)

I think the plan is for a mid  Febuary release date for 0.7 final.  After that the trunk will be moved to branches and the 0.8 code moved to the trunk in the repository.  There isn't really any merging because the code bases are so different as is the database.  The end of Feb will be the goal for the next release of 0.8 and migration scripts will try to be done for then.  The new version of the issue tracker will handle release dates for a milestone thanks to tkrol.  This will help communication with the community on when a milestone is sheduled for release.
